Aromatherapy

Pure oils

Pure (essential) oils are liquid extracts obtained usually by steam distillation from herbs, flowers, plants, woods and resins and are the main source of the specific aroma, flavour or perfume.

Brief history

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils and can be traced back to the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Greece and Rome and also China. The natural essences of pure oils were said to improve sensuality, aid tranquillity and calm, enhance concentration and help stimulate nerve function, leaving one looking and feeling healthier.

Essential oils were widely used for their therapeutic benefits, to treat ailments and to provide pleasure.

The recent revival of aromatherapy is seen as part of a greater respect for nature and the increasing desire to adopt a natural approach to health and well-being.

Current experience

The oils have been shown to have a variety of anti-bacterial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties.
Evening Primrose
The oils can act holistically with mood and emotion-enhancing capacity.

Each pure oil may have a variety of applications; for example, peppermint (as a treatment for both respiratory and digestive disorders)and lavender (for skin care, muscular pain and the nervous system).

The oils are intended for topical application to the skin (via a massage the most common method) or as inhalations; a few drops can also be added to bath water.

For general use, they are not intended to be taken internally.
